The North-South Corridor (NSC), currently under construction, is a 21.5-kilometer stretch of an underground expressway in Singapore connecting the Marina Bay area in the south and the Woodlands area in the northernmost part of the city. The NSC project is part of the Singaporean government’s continued efforts to expand infrastructure.

Despite not being the lowest bidder, Ssangyong E&C was ed as a contractor based on absolute trust from the client, which the company earned by successfully delivering the Marina Coastal Expressway Section 482 and the Downtown Line (DTL) Section 921. A joint venture between Ssangyong E&C (85%) and the Singaporean company Wai Fong (15%) won the design and build contract for Section N102 of the NSC.

N102 is considered the most challenging section of the entire project. Since the site is located near three MRT subway lines currently in operation, high precision construction is required. In particular, a bidirectional six-lane road has to be built a mere 30 cm above the upper part of the North East MRT Line (NEL). In addition, slurry walls must be created underneath Ellison Building, a protected historic landmark built almost 100 years ago, so the tunneling work must be accompanied by the reinforcement and repair work for the building. Since the site is located in the downtown area, the project requires smooth handling of complaints from people nearby and more than 50 traffic diversions as well as careful construction and safety management.
