The Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) project was part of Singapore’s land transportation network expansion plan aimed at relieving traffic congestion while organically connecting downtown areas to major infrastructure such as Changi International Airport. The project involved building a 5-kilometer stretch of a bidirectional 10-lane urban expressway located in southern Singapore.

In this project, Ssangyong E&C designed and built a 1-kilometer section of the MCE. This short stretch cost a whopping USD 627 million (that is, USD 627,000 per meter) to build, setting a new record as the most expensive expressway section and as the costliest expressway per meter ever commissioned by the Singaporean government.

Located in a reclaimed coastal area, it was an extremely challenging section that also involved the building of connecting structures, which would later be linked to new subway and road sections, on soft soil that presents a risk of ground subsidence and flooding. To accomplish this feat, some 480,000 m3 of concrete, a massive amount that could build multiple 25-story apartment buildings containing more than 3,000 units, as well as some 100,000 tons of reinforcing steel, was used.
