Kharg Oil tank Rehabilitation, a project that Ssangyong E&C won in March 1990, was to repair five oil tanks of 110m diameter, 18m in height and 1 million barrels in volume, among other tanks destroyed in the Iran-Iraq war, as well as one 500,000 barrel tank and other facilities, including sludge removal and electrical instrumentations.
There had been attempts to cut out the destroyed steel plates and to remove the thick oil sludge on the floor, but it didn’t work out that well. So, this project was prolonged for 10 more months and had to use 2.8 times more materials due to frequent changes in the construction range and related additional work. What’s worse, during the construction, storms destroyed the facilities and the Gulf war caused some problems with labor supplies.
In order to shorten the period, the company started the construction even before additional construction costs were determined. With 140,000 working days and around 50 pieces of equipment, the company finished the rehabilitation in June 1993, reducing the period by more than two months.
